About the Opportunity
SGS is looking for a full-time Environmental Technician, 12-week term, Youth Position, Summer 2026
The Environmental Technician will provide technical assistance with day-to-day activities, including wildlife, fisheries, and vegetation surveys, data input, and research as needed on a broad range of the Environment Department projects and programs. This position will have both office and field work and reports directly to the SGS Environment Manager.
More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Provides technical assistance to fisheries and water programs, including but not limited to: the Portage Creek Chinook Salmon Recovery Program, the White Sturgeon eDNA Project, and water quality monitoring.
- Assists the Environment Department with the collection and analysis of biological data and Traditional Knowledge related to water, fish, medicinal and non-medicinal plants, wildlife, and habitats.
- Provides technical assistance to wildlife management initiatives, including the Wildlife Health Program, the Post-Wildfire Food Security Project, Fraser River Bighorn Sheep Monitoring, and other territory-wide conservation strategies.
- Assists the Environment Department with data entry, data management, and the organization of field gear and field data.
- Collaborates with the SGS Communications Department to prepare monthly newsletters on behalf of the SGS Environment Department.
- Assists in providing effective recommendations on natural resource issues as they arise, both orally and in writing.
- Participates in technical meetings as required, as well as job-shadowing opportunities with provincial health officers, federal and provincial conservation and fishery officers, provincial wildlife health biologists, provincial wildfire officers, the Lillooet Tribal Council, and SGS Environment Technicians.
- Works cooperatively as a member of the SGS Environment Program and with other SGS staff and St’át’imc Communities.
About You
This position is partially funded by the Canada Summer Job Grant. To qualify
- You will need must be between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment.
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN); and
- Be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a person who has been granted refugee status in Canada. International students and other temporary residents of Canada are not eligible.
The following are also required by SGS:
- A valid driver’s license and a clean driver’s abstract
- Ability and willingness to travel within the territory which spans from extends north to Churn Creek and to South French Bar; northwest to the headwaters of Bridge River; north and east toward Hat Creek Valley; east to the Big Slide; south to the island on Harrison Lake and west of the Fraser River to the headwaters of Lillooet River, Ryan River and Black Tusk.
- Ability to undergo a criminal record check and vulnerable sector check
Experience and Personal Qualifications:
- Good work ethic and works with integrity.
- Familiarity and entry-level experience within St’át’imc Territory, its diverse ecology, and traditional and current use of wildlife, fisheries, forestry, plants, and other natural resources.
- Problem-solving skills and able to identify key issues and overcome obstacles.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Effective interpersonal and people management skills.
- Effective organizational skills.
- Experience working with First Nations organizations, agencies, or communities an asset.
- Efficient computer skills with MS (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel).
- Ability to demonstrate tact, discretion, sound judgement, and respecting confidentiality.
- Flexible and adaptability.
- Willing to work in and around water and drive on non-paved roads.
Note: Preference will be given to applicants who have First Nation or Indigenous ancestry.
